Hats Off to gradsSt. Mary’s Catholic High School graduated 19 seniors at their commencement ceremonies Sunday, May 13 in the school gym. They welcomed back alumnus John P. Meyer from the Class of 1968 as their commencement speaker to share advice to the graduates.

Meyer is a retired Senior Vice President of the Sprint Corporation and formerly controller and ethics officer based out of Kansas City. He and his wife, Joy now live in Estero, Fla., and Vail, Colo. He advised the students to take the highs and lows of life without getting too emotional, not taking yourself too seriously and always having a connection to God in some fashion.

Abby Jones was the class valedictorian and Olivia Schaller was the class salutatorian and presented a joint address recapping humorous events, positive traits of class members and notable attributes of teachers. They also noted the departure of beloved longtime math educator Diane Frank, who will be leaving St. Mary’s after 33 years of service and presented her with flowers.

Several awards were presented during the event:

-         Iowa Bar Award: Joshua Feltner

-         Kiwanis Award: Olivia Schaller

-         Mary Catherine Hagedorn Diocesan Scholarship: Josue Castro

-         St. Mary’s Service Award: Abby Jones

-         Spirit of St. Mary’s Award: Kallie Goettsch

Student body president Abby Jones transferred the ceremonial school key to 2018-19 incoming president Elizabeth “Lizzie” Lenhart. A faculty choir gave their farewell and blessing by singing “The Cross of Love” for the students.

Diplomas were conferred by school board president Andrew Goettsch. The program concluded with prayer by school chaplain Fr. Michael Cronin and the rose ceremony where the graduates presented roses to their parents.
